Information

This ceiling lamp is a rare model 1578 attributed to Swedish architect and designer Carl-Axel Acking, produced in the 1950s by Bröderna Malmströms Metallvarufabrik in Sweden. The lamp exemplifies the Scandinavian approach to mid-century lighting through its organic glass form, understated fittings, and functional refinement.

The fixture features a vertically suspended composition with a brass ceiling cup, a slender brass stem, and a deep socket collar with evenly spaced vertical incisions that add discreet decorative articulation. The opaline glass diffuser is the central visual element of the piece. Shaped with fluid, sculptural contours, the glass body transitions from a narrow neck to a broad, undulating profile before tightening again at the base opening. The glass surface is softly frosted, diffusing light in a uniform, ambient manner. When illuminated, the lamp exhibits a warm, even glow with shadowless transitions across its curves.

The condition of the lamp is excellent. The brass components retain their original finish, showing subtle patination consistent with age, while the opaline glass is intact and free from cracks or discoloration. The design displays both formal restraint and organic softness, hallmarks of Acking’s approach to interior architecture and furnishings.

Carl-Axel Acking (1910–2001) was one of Sweden’s most versatile modernists. Trained as both architect and designer, his oeuvre spans architecture, furniture, and lighting. He often worked with noble materials and was known for integrating craftsmanship with modern function. Although the attribution of this model remains based on form and period characteristics, the detailing and proportions are in keeping with Acking’s known lighting designs from the 1940s and 50s.

The producer, Bröderna Malmströms Metallvarufabrik, was a Stockholm-based manufacturer active in the mid-20th century and recognized for high-quality brass and lighting production, often working with leading Swedish designers.
