Carl-Axel Acking floor lamp
This very rare floor lamp, designed by Carl-Axel Acking and produced by Bröderna Malmströms Metallvarufabrik in Sweden, is a distinguished example of Scandinavian modernism from the mid-20th century. It illustrates Acking’s characteristic ability to merge functionality with refined materiality and form, producing objects that are both visually compelling and technically resolved.
The design is defined by a striking interplay of brass and leather. The lamp’s upper section features a perforated brass shade composed of three shallow, semi-circular bowls arranged symmetrically around the central light source. This triple-shade configuration provides both functional light diffusion and sculptural presence. The perforations allow light to filter gently through the brass, casting a soft ambient glow while emphasizing the layered geometry of the shade. The brass retains its golden tone, with a natural patina and minor surface variation that underscore its vintage authenticity.
The central column of the lamp is wrapped in brown leather, introducing a tactile contrast to the metallic elements. The leather is tightly fitted and subtly aged, showing fine creasing and color variation consistent with long-term use. This material pairing—textured leather against polished brass—is emblematic of Acking’s thoughtful material compositions, which often blend warmth and precision.
The base of the lamp is a flat, circular brass plate, designed for structural stability while visually anchoring the tall form. Its simplicity reinforces the verticality of the design and allows the more complex interplay of the upper elements to take visual precedence.
The overall condition is very good vintage. The brass components show signs of age in the form of light patina and minor surface wear, while the leather-wrapped shaft is intact and well-preserved. These signs of use contribute to the piece’s historical character without compromising its function or appearance.
Carl-Axel Acking (1910–2001) was one of Sweden’s leading architects and designers, active during the height of Scandinavian modernism. His furniture and lighting designs often reflect architectural clarity, elegant proportions, and an intelligent use of materials. This floor lamp is a representative example of his mid-century lighting work—sculptural, materially rich, and functionally resolved.
The lamp measures 65 cm in diameter (25.6 inches) and 169 cm in height (66.5 inches), making it a commanding yet graceful presence in interior spaces. It is an exceptional example of Swedish modern lighting design, demonstrating Acking’s capacity to distill architectural sophistication into domestic-scale objects.
