Information

The Trienna sofa is a rare example designed by Finnish architect and designer Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs and produced by Puunveisto Oy in Finland during the 1950s. It holds an iconic status within Scandinavian modernism, combining sculptural presence with the clarity and warmth characteristic of Nordic craftsmanship.

The frame is constructed from walnut, a hardwood prized for its strength and rich, expressive grain. The wood is finished in a warm medium-brown tone that accentuates its natural figure and depth. The structural form is geometrically precise, featuring sharply beveled front and side planes that flow seamlessly into broad, tapered legs. These legs are integral to the sofa’s silhouette, contributing both sturdiness and an elegant visual balance.

A defining feature of the Trienna sofa is its woven backrest panels, consisting of three individual sections handwoven from bentwood strips in a diamond-patterned lattice. These flexible panels provide ergonomic support while serving as a decorative architectural element. Each panel is inset within deep chamfered frames, enhancing the design’s structural character and providing a tactile contrast to the smooth walnut surfaces.

The seat and back cushions have been recently reupholstered in a high-quality wool fabric of warm neutral beige. The cushions maintain a firm, rectangular shape that complements the angular lines of the frame. This restoration respects the sofa’s original proportions and design integrity. Historically, the sofa would have been upholstered in leather or coarse natural fabrics in earth tones, consistent with the organic material palette favored in Finnish modernism.

Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs (1911–1996) was a significant figure in post-war Finnish design, celebrated for integrating organic forms with rational construction techniques. His collaboration with Puunveisto Oy produced furniture lines that advanced the use of laminated and solid wood in domestic interiors. The Trienna sofa, with its sophisticated joinery, dynamic rear profile, and honest material expression, remains one of his most respected designs.

This sofa measures 180 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height (approximately 70.9 x 31.5 x 29.1 inches), with a seat height of 38 cm (approximately 15 inches). It is in excellent restored condition, featuring fully intact woven panels, refinished walnut surfaces, and newly upholstered cushions.
