Biography
Carl-Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs established Puunveisto during the 1940s and remained closely involved in the company’s production for several decades. His designs were often considered ahead of their time, characterized by flowing, sculptural structures and a strong emphasis on quality manufacturing. Rather than focusing on rapid commercial expansion, he pursued a more idealistic vision of furniture making, aiming to elevate both design and craftsmanship within the Finnish furniture industry.
During the 1950s, his furniture gained international recognition and was exhibited outside Finland, including at the Milan Triennale, while also being distributed through leading design retailers in Scandinavia. The Siesta chair remains his most celebrated design, reflecting the postwar interest in lightweight construction, comfort, and modern living.
Carl-Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs’s work represents an important chapter in Finnish modernism, where experimentation with plywood and a commitment to craftsmanship helped shape the direction of postwar furniture design.
