Carl-Johan Boman dressing table

This rare freestanding dressing table was designed by Carl-Johan Boman and produced by Boman Oy in Finland during the 1940s. Crafted from ash wood, the piece exemplifies Finnish mid-century design’s refined sensibility, blending precise craftsmanship with understated decorative elegance.

The dressing table features a rectangular base supported by four tapering, rounded legs and a modest apron. The tabletop has a subtle curve along the user-facing edge, softening the overall geometry and showcasing the natural symmetry of the ash veneer. The veneer displays a highly figured, bookmatched grain pattern in warm golden-brown tones with flowing linear structures. The upper section comprises three flat glass mirror panels with rounded corners and beveled edges, mounted via fine brass fittings onto a solid ash-veneered backrest. This design allows the piece to stand freely and be appreciated from all sides.

The table bears the Boman Oy stamp and company emblem, confirming its origin and manufacture date. Founded in the 19th century, Boman Oy specialized in high-quality cabinetry and bespoke furniture through close collaboration with leading Finnish designers. Carl-Johan Boman (1883–1969), a member of the Boman family and company director, was both a designer and leader who integrated modernist influences with neoclassical restraint, drawing on Finnish material culture and cabinetmaking traditions.

The dressing table is in very good vintage condition, showing light surface wear consistent with age. The ash retains its original luster, with minor marks and signs of use, while the mirror glass remains clean and intact, showing slight oxidation at the edges.

Overall dimensions measure 106 cm wide, 50 cm deep, and 113.5 cm high to the top of the mirror (approximately 41.7 by 19.7 by 44.7 inches), with a tabletop height of 65 cm (25.6 inches).
