Carl-Johan Boman easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs was designed and produced by Carl-Johan Boman in Finland during the 1940s. The design exemplifies early Scandinavian modernism, blending late Art Deco influences with the modernist emphasis on soft curves, comfort, and refined craftsmanship.
Constructed with birch frames, the chairs stand on four slightly tapered solid birch legs finished in a warm honey tone. The overall silhouette is compact and enveloping, featuring a rounded backrest that curves outward into a partial wing form. The backrest is adorned with symmetrically arranged fabric-covered buttons, adding a subtle decorative detail that accentuates the form’s volume and structure.
Both chairs have been newly reupholstered in pale cream-colored velvet. The upholstery is tailored with visible edging and piping along the seams, and the velvet’s fine, even nap softly reflects light, enhancing the sculptural curves of the backrest and seat. The chairs’ low and deep proportions, wide seats, and gently reclined backs emphasize relaxation and lounging, hallmarks of Nordic lounge furniture from this era.
Carl-Johan Boman (1883–1969) was a pivotal figure in early Finnish furniture design and manufacturing, known for sophisticated forms and careful material selection. His workshop combined traditional cabinetmaking techniques with emerging modernist ideals.
These chairs are in excellent restored condition, structurally sound with fresh upholstery and well-preserved birch legs showing only minimal age-related wear. Each chair measures 72 cm wide, 75 cm deep, and 71 cm high, with a seat height of 40 cm—approximately 28.3 inches wide, 29.5 inches deep, 28 inches high, and a seat height of 15.7 inches.
