Chest of drawers
This rare high bureau or chest of drawers was produced in Denmark during the 1960s by an unknown designer. The piece is crafted from rosewood, showcasing a pronounced and visually dynamic grain pattern enhanced by a smooth lacquered finish that highlights the wood’s natural depth and contrast.
The chest features a vertical arrangement of eight drawers, each equipped with recessed circular handles made of brushed steel. These handles have a distinctive split design, offering a sculptural and tactile contrast to the organic texture of the rosewood. This juxtaposition introduces a modern and slightly industrial edge to an otherwise traditional material palette.
The cabinet’s construction exhibits fine craftsmanship, with mitered corners and a recessed darker stained wood base that gives the impression of the piece floating above the floor. Internally, the drawer boxes are made from lighter hardwood and showcase exposed dovetail joinery, signaling attention to traditional joinery methods. The drawers remain structurally sound, with original runners that operate smoothly.
Stylistically, the chest aligns with Danish mid-century functionalism but integrates geometric precision and an expressive material dialogue. The steel handles suggest influences from Danish brutalism and the minimalist design movements emerging in the late 1960s.
The piece is in very good vintage condition, with consistent surface finish on the rosewood, minor wear, and faint marks commensurate with age. The steel hardware exhibits a soft patina typical of period metal. There are no visible repairs or restorations, and the structure is stable.
Dimensions are 46 cm wide, 48 cm deep, and 133 cm high (18.1 x 18.9 x 52.4 inches).
