Christian Berg sculpture

This sculpture titled Blomform 1 was created by the Swedish sculptor Christian Berg around 1929–1930. Executed in polished bronze and mounted on a stone base, the work represents an early and significant example of Berg’s sculptural language, in which organic abstraction and reduced form play a central role. The piece is cast by E. Pettersson Fud., as indicated by the casting stamp, and carries provenance from Rolf Schmitz.

The composition is characterized by a vertically oriented, flowing form with concave and convex surfaces that interact dynamically with light. The shape suggests a stylized botanical or floral motif, abstracted to its essential volumes and rhythms rather than rendered naturalistically. The bronze surface has been carefully worked, with smooth transitions and softened edges that emphasize the sculpture’s continuous movement. The polished finish enhances the sculptural depth, while areas of patina have developed over time, adding tonal variation in warm golden and brown hues.

Christian Berg was a key figure in Scandinavian modern sculpture and is closely associated with the development of modernism in Sweden. Influenced by Cubism and Constructivism, Berg sought to balance abstraction with organic references, often drawing inspiration from natural growth and inner structural logic. His works from the late 1920s and early 1930s are particularly important, marking a transition toward a more modern and international sculptural expression within the Nordic context.

The sculpture is in good vintage condition, showing signs of usage consistent with age. These include light surface marks and an even, well-preserved patina on the bronze, as well as minor wear to the stone base. These traces are in keeping with the material and age of the work and do not detract from its overall integrity.

The sculpture measures approximately 20.5 cm in width, 13 cm in depth, and 41.5 cm in height, corresponding to about 8.1 inches in width, 5.1 inches in depth, and 16.3 inches in height.
