Christian Berg sculpture
This abstract bronze sculpture titled Kungens öra (King’s Ear) was designed by Christian Berg and cast in 1955. The work is executed in bronze with a combination of polished surfaces and areas with darker, blackened patination, emphasizing the organic contours and internal void of the form. The sculpture is mounted on a rectangular stone base in dark grey to black stone, providing visual contrast and structural stability.
The composition is characterized by a biomorphic, ear-like shape with a flowing, asymmetrical outline and a central opening. The highly refined surfaces reflect light differently across the curves, enhancing the sense of depth and movement that is central to Berg’s sculptural language. The interplay between polished highlights and darker patinated areas accentuates the sculptural volume and the tactile qualities of the bronze.
The sculpture bears the casting stamp Erik Pettersson Fud., referring to the renowned Swedish foundry operated by Erik Pettersson, known for producing high-quality bronze casts for many leading Scandinavian sculptors of the twentieth century. The provenance is noted as Rolf Schmitz. Christian Berg was a key figure in Scandinavian modernism, associated with both sculpture and painting, and is particularly recognized for his abstract works inspired by natural forms and the human body.
The piece is in good vintage condition, with visible signs of age and handling consistent with its material and period. The patina is well preserved and contributes to the overall character of the sculpture, without compromising its structural integrity.
Dimensions are approximately 17 cm in width, 11 cm in depth, and 34.5 cm in height, corresponding to about 6.7 x 4.3 x 13.6 inches.
