David Rosén sideboard
This rare sideboard was designed by David Rosén in the 1950s and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden. Rosén, who worked extensively with Nordiska Kompaniet’s in-house design department, created refined furniture pieces that combined functional modernism with artisanal detailing, making him an influential figure in Swedish mid-century design.
The sideboard is crafted in mahogany with rosewood accents and brass fittings. Its form is rectangular and elevated on a solid frame with stretcher supports, ensuring both stability and visual balance. The central section contains six drawers, each fitted with sculpted brass handles that add a warm metallic contrast to the wood surfaces. On either side, tambour doors slide open to reveal shelved storage compartments, a solution that maximizes usability while maintaining a clean front profile. The mahogany presents a rich reddish-brown hue with subtle depth, complemented by darker rosewood detailing that provides tonal variation.
This design embodies the principles of Scandinavian mid-century furniture: simplicity of form, clarity of function, and careful attention to materials. The tambour doors are particularly indicative of Rosén’s interest in refined joinery, offering a tactile and practical alternative to hinged doors. Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden’s leading department store and design house during the 20th century, produced a number of iconic pieces in this period, with Rosén among their most recognized contributors.
The sideboard is presented in good vintage condition, showing small signs of usage consistent with its age. The patina of the wood and brass highlights its history while the restoration ensures the piece retains both structural integrity and visual elegance.
