Information

A very rare and substantial set of twelve dining chairs, produced in Denmark during the 1930s and attributed to the cabinetmaking tradition of Jacob Kjær. The design reflects a refined balance between late neoclassical restraint and the emerging functional elegance that would come to define early Scandinavian modernism. The chairs present a cohesive and architecturally considered silhouette, where each element is carefully proportioned and executed with a high level of craftsmanship.

The frames are crafted from solid Cuban mahogany, displaying a warm, reddish-brown tone with a deep, lively grain that becomes particularly evident along the gently tapered legs and the subtly curved back supports. The backrests are defined by a rectangular, softly rounded frame enclosing a series of evenly spaced vertical slats, lending both visual rhythm and a sense of lightness to the otherwise robust construction. The rear legs flow seamlessly into the back supports with a restrained curvature, providing both ergonomic comfort and structural continuity.

The seats are generously proportioned and upholstered in the original niger leather, which has developed a rich and varied patina over time. The leather shows natural creasing, tonal variation, and surface wear consistent with age, enhancing the tactile and visual character of the set. Each seat is bordered with individually applied brass rivets, forming a precise decorative edge that contrasts subtly against the darker tones of the leather and wood. The seat shape is slightly concave, offering a comfortable sitting experience while maintaining a clean and tailored appearance.

Construction details reveal a high level of cabinetmaking skill, particularly in the joinery and the finishing of transitions between elements. The legs are finely tapered with crisp edges softened just enough to reflect hand-finishing techniques. The overall impression is one of understated luxury, where material quality and craftsmanship take precedence over ornamentation.

The set remains in good vintage condition, with visible signs of use consistent with age. The leather exhibits wear, creasing, and patina, while the wood surfaces show minor marks and variations that contribute to the authenticity and historical presence of the chairs. Structurally, the chairs appear sound and stable.
