Eero Saarinen side table
This rare side table from the Tulip series was designed by Finnish-American architect and designer Eero Saarinen and produced by Knoll International in the United States. Introduced in 1957, the Tulip collection was Saarinen’s innovative response to the traditional “slum of legs” aiming to create a unified, sculptural base that eliminated clutter beneath tables.
This particular model features an oval black marble tabletop with pronounced white veining. The marble’s polished surface reveals deep blacks and slate grays intersected by irregular, branching white striations, lending a strong graphic presence. The tabletop has softly beveled edges that enhance its refined appearance. Supporting the top is a white-lacquered cast aluminum pedestal base, sculpted in Saarinen’s signature organic form with a round foot and slender, flaring stem.
Eero Saarinen (1910–1961) was a pivotal figure in 20th-century architecture and design, celebrated for combining structural innovation with expressive, futuristic aesthetics. The Tulip collection remains an icon of mid-century modernism, reflecting his pursuit of unity and clarity in design. Knoll International has been the exclusive manufacturer, ensuring the design’s enduring global influence.
The table is in very good vintage condition. The marble surface shows minimal wear with only light markings, while the lacquered base exhibits small chips along the bottom edge consistent with age and use.
