Eero Saarinen side table
This rare tulip side table was designed by the Finnish-American architect and designer Eero Saarinen and produced by Knoll International in the United States in 1957. Saarinen, one of the most influential figures in modern design, was known for his sculptural, organic approach and his desire to eliminate what he called the “slum of legs” beneath furniture. His work for Knoll — including the iconic Tulip series — revolutionized mid-century interiors with its seamless combination of form and function.
The table features a circular top in richly grained rosewood, characterized by deep brown tones with darker streaks and natural variations that highlight the wood’s organic beauty. The base is crafted from black lacquered metal and takes on Saarinen’s signature pedestal form, tapering elegantly from a round foot to support the tabletop with visual lightness and structural stability. This contrast between the warm, natural surface and the sleek, industrial base exemplifies Saarinen’s modernist philosophy and mastery of material juxtaposition.
Produced by Knoll International, a company celebrated for its collaborations with mid-century masters such as Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia, and Mies van der Rohe, this table represents the highest quality craftsmanship and design innovation of the era. Its minimalist yet sculptural profile allows it to complement a wide range of interiors, functioning equally well as a side table, occasional table, or standalone statement piece.
The table remains in good vintage condition with signs of age and use, consistent with its period.
