Information

A rare pair of adjustable wall lamps designed by Eje Ahlgren and produced by Bergboms in Sweden during the mid-20th century. Executed entirely in brass, the lamps combine a restrained architectural construction with thoughtful functional details characteristic of Swedish Modern lighting.

Each lamp consists of a slender tubular brass arm that rises vertically from a compact wall-mounted bracket before bending gently forward to support a sculptural conical shade. The elongated proportions give the lamps an unusually elegant silhouette, while the articulated connection at the shade allows the direction of the light to be adjusted. The wall fitting incorporates a further swivelling mechanism, making the lamps particularly versatile as bedside, reading, or accent lights.

The shades are especially distinctive. Their softly modelled conical form is punctuated by numerous small perforations arranged around the lower section and neck. When illuminated, these apertures create delicate points and streaks of light across the surrounding wall, contrasting with the concentrated pool of warm light projected from the open underside of each shade. This combination of direct and decorative illumination gives the lamps a particularly atmospheric character.

Eje Ahlgren was a Swedish designer associated with the refined functionalism of post-war Scandinavian lighting. His designs are notable for their economy of line and ingenious mechanical solutions, qualities clearly expressed in this pair. Bergboms, based in Malmö, was among Sweden’s important lighting manufacturers of the mid-20th century and produced designs that ranged from restrained Scandinavian Modern pieces to more expressive decorative lighting.

The brass has developed a rich, naturally aged surface with variations in tone, oxidation, small marks, and traces of use throughout. Rather than diminishing the design, this patina gives the lamps considerable depth and character, particularly across the perforated shades. The original dark switches provide a subtle contrast against the warm brass surfaces.

Good vintage condition with signs of age and use and an attractive natural patina.
