Erik Glemme ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Erik Glemme and produced in Sweden during the 1940s. The lamp showcases a sculptural form, featuring a spherical shade constructed from teak ribs intricately interwoven with leather straps and covered by stretched paper. This combination of materials exemplifies Glemme’s affinity for organic forms and masterful carpentry. Suspended from a brass ceiling mount by multiple slender cables, the lamp appears to float, enhancing its visual lightness. When illuminated, the paper shade emits a warm, atmospheric glow, while the leather lacing allows small points of light to escape, adding subtle depth and texture to the design.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, showing typical signs of use and patina consistent with its age. There is minor damage to the paper shade, which does not detract significantly from its structural integrity or function. The teak framework retains its natural tone and grain, while the leather straps show some aging but remain intact.
Erik Glemme (1905–1959) was a renowned Swedish architect and landscape designer, celebrated for his contributions to Stockholm’s urban development. Alongside Holger Blom, he was a leading figure of the “Stockholm Style,” which fused functionalist architecture with thoughtful landscape planning. Glemme’s notable projects include Tegnérlunden, Rålambshovsparken, and the Norr Mälarstrand promenade. His architectural practice extended to interior design, producing furniture and lighting distinguished by asymmetrical, organic aesthetics.
This lamp originated from one of Glemme’s significant clients, the Swedish tie manufacturer Amanda Christensen AB. The company owned the property at Kungsbroplan 1 in Stockholm, where Glemme was commissioned to design both fixed and loose furnishings for office spaces and private apartments, including this lamp. Originally installed in the private apartment at Kungsbroplan 1, it holds particular importance within Glemme’s oeuvre.
The lamp measures 55 cm (21.7 inches) in diameter and 105 cm (41.3 inches) in height, including the suspension, combining sculptural elegance with historic significance.
