Erik Ivarsson floor vase
This large floor vase, designed by Erik Ivarsson and produced by Höganäs Keramik in Sweden during the 1950s, exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian ceramics with a bold graphic and architectural form. The vase features a narrow, flared neck flowing into a rounded ovoid body that tapers gently toward the foot.
Its surface decoration is striking, employing cobalt blue, black, and white in slip-trailed and hand-painted geometric motifs arranged in rhythmic horizontal bands. These include vertical dashes, stylized eyes, diagonal lines, and meandering key-pattern friezes—visual references blending ancient Mediterranean and tribal symbolism with modernist abstraction. The deep blue and black contrast sharply against the creamy white background, producing a dynamic sense of movement and energy.
Marked on the base with Höganäs stamps and model number 809, the stoneware vase is covered in a glossy clear glaze that enhances the painted colors while preserving the tactile quality of the decoration.
Erik Ivarsson’s work at Höganäs reflects the company’s mid-century ambition to meld traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Höganäs, based in southern Sweden, was known for durable yet artistically expressive ceramics during this era.
This vase remains in good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age. It stands as a significant sculptural piece representing Scandinavian ceramic art’s dialogue between craft and modernism.
Dimensions are 22 cm in diameter and 45 cm in height (approximately 8.7 x 17.7 inches).
