Information

This rare height-adjustable floor lamp was designed by Erik Tidstrand and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden. It is a fine example of mid-20th century Scandinavian lighting design that balances decorative vibrancy with technical refinement. The piece reflects the period’s appreciation for adaptable functionality paired with bold, tactile materials.

The lamp features a slender brass structure with a telescoping pole that allows for adjustable height, ranging from 137 cm to 210 cm (approximately 53.9 to 82.7 inches). The height can be easily modified to accommodate different lighting needs, from reading to ambient lighting, emphasizing its versatility. The brass construction—including the pole and a broad, rounded base—is finished with a naturally aged patina that lends warmth and authenticity to the lamp’s vintage character.

The shade is slightly conical in shape and features pleated fabric, which enhances its texture and dimensionality. The fabric is adorned with a vivid floral pattern in green, orange, yellow, and white tones, presenting a lively contrast to the more reserved brass elements. The pattern reflects the playful yet elegant style of the era, contributing a decorative quality while maintaining a cohesive relationship with the lamp’s overall form.

The lamp measures 55 cm in width and 80 cm in depth (approximately 21.7 by 31.5 inches), giving it a wide reach suitable for overhanging seating areas or large interiors. Despite its bold shade, the structure remains visually balanced due to the minimal footprint of the base and the slender proportion of the central pole.

Erik Tidstrand was associated with Nordiska Kompaniet, one of Sweden’s most prestigious department stores and producers of fine furniture and lighting. NK’s design department was instrumental in shaping Swedish modernism, producing pieces with a focus on quality craftsmanship, premium materials, and understated elegance. Tidstrand’s work, while less widely documented than that of some of his contemporaries, reflects the refined modernist ethos that NK fostered during the mid-20th century.

This lamp remains in good vintage condition, with expected signs of age such as patina on the brass and minor wear to the fabric consistent with careful use. Its adjustable functionality, decorative flair, and provenance make it a distinctive and collectible example of Swedish design from the postwar period.
