Erik Wørts sideboard
This rare sideboard was designed by Danish cabinetmaker Erik Wørts and produced by Wørts Møbelsnedkeri in Denmark in 1959. Executed in teak with rosewood detailing, the piece exemplifies refined Danish mid-century craftsmanship and the functional elegance characteristic of the period. The design is defined by clean lines, precise proportions, and the use of high-quality materials, making it both a practical storage solution and a statement of fine woodworking.
The façade features two sliding tambour doors with vertically ribbed surfaces, which open smoothly to reveal adjustable shelving and additional internal storage compartments. Centrally positioned between the tambour sections are five drawers of varying depths, each fitted with sculpted rosewood handles, adding a subtle material contrast and tactile richness. The sideboard is supported by a solid teak base with stretcher elements, providing both structural stability and visual lightness.
Erik Wørts was known for designing furniture that merged architectural clarity with traditional cabinetmaking techniques. His work often emphasized functionality, harmonious proportions, and meticulous detailing—qualities evident in this piece. The use of tambour doors not only reflects a modernist aesthetic but also allows for efficient use of space, as they require no clearance for opening.
The sideboard measures 215 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 90 cm in height (84.6 x 19.7 x 35.4 inches). Its warm-toned teak, rosewood accents, and masterful joinery make it a distinguished example of Danish modern design from the late 1950s.
