Tue Poulsen & Erik Wørts coffee table
A rare coffee table designed by Tue Poulsen and Erik Wørts and produced by Willy Beck in Denmark during the 1960s. The piece represents a refined collaboration between ceramic artistry and cabinetmaking, characteristic of Danish modern design from the period.
The table is constructed in solid wengé, a dense hardwood with a deep brown tone and pronounced grain pattern that lends the frame a strong visual presence. The structure is defined by its clean, rectilinear lines, with square legs connected by stretchers that provide both stability and a sense of architectural clarity. The craftsmanship is precise, emphasizing sharp edges and well-balanced proportions.
The top is composed of individually hand-glazed ceramic tiles designed by Tue Poulsen. Arranged in a geometric grid, the composition combines rectangular and circular elements, creating a rhythmic and varied surface. The glaze displays a rich palette of earthy tones, including deep browns, ochres, and muted greens, with areas of mottling, pooling, and textural variation that give each tile a unique character. One tile bears the signature “Tue” underscoring the artistic origin of the ceramic work.
The contrast between the dark, structured wengé frame and the expressive, tactile tile surface creates a balanced interplay between form and decoration. The table functions equally as a practical piece of furniture and as a sculptural object, reflecting the Scandinavian approach of integrating art into everyday design.
The table remains in good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, including light surface marks to the wood and natural variations in the glaze.
