Estrid Ericson jar
This small cylindrical lidded jar was designed by Estrid Ericson and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden in 1953. Executed in pewter, the body is smooth and subtly reflective, capped with a gently domed lid. The lid is adorned with an oval-shaped blue stone inlay—likely lapis lazuli—set into a polished pewter bezel. A slender band of brass encircles the junction between lid and base, providing a warm contrast to the cool, matte tone of the pewter.
The object’s proportions are compact and precise, with a form that emphasizes utility while maintaining decorative refinement. The jar’s overall aesthetic is rooted in Swedish functionalist traditions, yet the addition of the semi-precious stone introduces a note of luxury and individuality. The combination of materials—pewter, brass, and stone—is characteristic of Ericson’s approach to decorative arts, where she often blended utilitarian objects with elegant, sometimes exotic, touches.
Estrid Ericson was the founder of Svenskt Tenn in 1924 and one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Swedish design. Her contributions were foundational to the development of the Swedish Modern movement, particularly through her collaborations with designers like Josef Frank. As a designer and creative director, Ericson had a distinctive ability to merge Nordic craftsmanship with international materials and motifs. Her pewter objects—many of which were produced in limited series—remain highly regarded for their subtle elegance and impeccable craftsmanship.
The underside bears stamped marks including the Svenskt Tenn maker’s mark, confirming its provenance, as well as Swedish control hallmarks. The jar is in excellent condition with a clean surface, retaining its original finish and no structural or cosmetic flaws.
This piece measures 6.5 cm in diameter and 9.5 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 2.56 inches in diameter and 3.74 inches in height. Compact yet sophisticated, it exemplifies Ericson’s vision of functional objects elevated through careful design and material sensitivity.
