Estrid Ericson (1894–1981) was a Swedish designer, entrepreneur, and co-founder of the interior design company Svenskt Tenn. She played a central role in shaping the company’s identity and in establishing a distinctly Swedish approach to decorative arts during the 20th century. Although trained as a drawing teacher, Ericson became known for her work in interior design, product development, and curating collaborations with leading designers, most notably Josef Frank.

Biography

Estrid Ericson studied drawing at the Technical School in Stockholm, now known as Konstfack. In 1924 she founded Svenskt Tenn together with the pewter artist Nils Fougstedt. The company initially focused on high-quality pewter objects but gradually expanded into a broader range of home furnishings, textiles, and interior accessories.

A defining moment in Ericson’s career occurred in 1934, when Austrian-born architect Josef Frank joined Svenskt Tenn. Their collaboration became one of the most influential partnerships in Scandinavian design history. Ericson was responsible for the company’s overall direction, selecting materials, developing products, and shaping the distinctive visual identity that combined comfort, color, and craftsmanship.

Throughout her career, Ericson maintained a strong interest in decorative detail and the expressive use of pattern and material. Under her leadership, Svenskt Tenn developed interiors that balanced tradition and modernity, often incorporating textiles, furniture, and objects into cohesive domestic environments. Her work helped position Svenskt Tenn as an important voice in Swedish design during the 20th century.

Estrid Ericson’s legacy lies not only in the objects she designed, but in her role as a creative director and cultural figure who influenced the direction of Swedish interior design. Her vision for Svenskt Tenn established a lasting model for integrating design, craftsmanship, and everyday living.
