Finn Juhl easy chair
This rare easy chair with matching stool, model Bwana, was designed by Finn Juhl and produced by France & Daverkosen in Denmark during the 1960s. Constructed from solid teak and upholstered in its original black leather, the set exemplifies Juhl’s distinctive approach to blending rich natural materials with sculptural, organic forms. The chair’s frame is notable for its characteristic “floating” design, where the seat and backrest appear to be suspended within the wooden structure, creating a sense of lightness and visual intrigue.
The chair features a slightly reclined high backrest designed for ergonomic comfort, complemented by wide, padded armrests that are gently curved and upholstered in leather. The side profile reveals a thoughtful interplay between angular and organic shapes, with tapered teak legs supporting softly rounded edges throughout the design. The accompanying stool mirrors this design language, constructed from solid teak with an upholstered leather cushion shaped to echo the chair’s seat curvature. This allows the stool to function both as a comfortable footrest and a standalone seating piece.
Finn Juhl (1912–1989) was a pivotal figure in Danish modernism, recognized for infusing furniture design with an expressive, sculptural sensibility that distinguished his work from the more rigid functionalism of many contemporaries. Drawing inspiration from fine art and sculpture, Juhl’s designs are characterized by organic proportions, seamless joinery, and innovative “floating” elements that combine aesthetic grace with comfort.
France & Daverkosen, a prominent Danish manufacturer active in the mid-20th century, was known for its collaborations with leading designers like Finn Juhl. Their production emphasized exceptional craftsmanship and the use of high-quality materials, contributing to the enduring collectability and desirability of their furniture.
The easy chair measures 86 centimeters (33.9 inches) in width, 88 centimeters (34.6 inches) in depth, and 91 centimeters (35.8 inches) in height, with a seat height of 39 centimeters (15.4 inches). The stool measures 63 centimeters (24.8 inches) in width, 47 centimeters (18.5 inches) in depth, and 41 centimeters (16.1 inches) in height. Together, they represent a refined example of mid-century Danish design, combining sculptural form with functional comfort.
