Finn Juhl easy chair Grasshopper
The Grasshopper easy chair, designed by Finn Juhl in 1938 and produced by House of Finn Juhl in Denmark, is a seminal piece in Danish modernist furniture history. Originally, only two chairs were made and exhibited at cabinetmaker Niels Vodder’s stand during the 1938 Cabinetmaker’s Exhibition. Unsold at the time, Finn Juhl purchased them himself to prevent Vodder from a financial loss. These two original examples remained unique until 2019, when House of Finn Juhl reintroduced the Grasshopper for contemporary production.
The chair is distinguished by its sculptural walnut frame featuring an angular, geometric construction. The intersecting wooden elements form a dynamic structure, juxtaposing the organic upholstered seat and backrest. The backrest includes extended wings, which not only contribute to the chair’s striking visual profile but also provide ergonomic support. Precision joinery in the walnut frame underscores the high level of craftsmanship characteristic of Finn Juhl’s work.
The seat and backrest are upholstered in natural leather, tufted to impart a refined texture that complements the warm tones of the walnut. The chair’s low-slung silhouette and deep recline emphasize comfort while preserving an architectural elegance and sculptural presence.
Finn Juhl was a visionary Danish architect and designer who introduced organic and expressive forms into furniture design, departing from the more functionalist styles of his time. His pioneering approach profoundly influenced Scandinavian modernism and continues to inspire designers internationally.
The dimensions are approximately 86 cm in width, 105 cm in depth, 92.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 34 cm (33.9 x 41.3 x 36.4 inches; seat height 13.4 inches). This modern production from 2019 remains in excellent condition, faithfully preserving the original design’s integrity while incorporating contemporary craftsmanship standards.
