Finn Juhl easy chairs

This rare pair of NV-45 easy chairs was designed by Finn Juhl and produced by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder in Denmark, a collaboration that represents one of the high points of Danish mid-century craftsmanship. Designed in 1945, the NV-45 exemplifies Juhl’s sculptural approach to furniture design, characterized by organic curves, floating elements, and a seamless integration between structure and form. Each chair is stamped by the maker, affirming its authenticity and provenance.

The frames are executed in teak, finely crafted and hand-finished to highlight the natural figure and depth of the wood. The organic armrests are sculpted as continuous extensions of the frame, demonstrating Juhl’s mastery in uniting function and artistry. The chairs have been newly reupholstered in contrasting dark grey and white fabric, emphasizing the lightness of the design and complementing the warm tone of the teak. The combination of soft textiles and precisely shaped wood results in a balanced and inviting composition that is both architectural and sensuous.

Finn Juhl (1912–1989) was a leading figure of Danish modernism, known for introducing a sculptural and expressive dimension to furniture design. His work, often produced in close partnership with Niels Vodder, pushed the boundaries of traditional joinery, allowing forms to appear suspended and fluid. The NV-45, sometimes referred to as “the mother of all modern chairs,” is considered one of his defining designs—combining technical innovation with a humanistic sense of comfort and proportion.

Both chairs are in good vintage condition with signs of age and minor repairs to the armrests. The teak frames show a rich patina consistent with age, reflecting their careful use and preservation. The upholstery is newly fitted, providing a refreshed contrast to the aged wood surface.
