Flemming Lassen sofa
This rare Danish sofa was designed by Flemming Lassen in the 1940s and produced by the renowned cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær. Lassen, known for his organic forms and focus on comfort, was a leading figure in the early development of Danish modern design. His work often merged sculptural silhouettes with traditional craftsmanship, and this piece is a representative example of his approach. Jacob Kjær, active in Copenhagen during the mid-20th century, was celebrated for his impeccable joinery and use of high-quality materials, often collaborating with prominent designers of the era.
The sofa features a gently curved backrest and softly rounded arms, creating a cohesive and enveloping form. It rests on four slightly tapered legs in ash, stained to a warm, medium-brown tone. The upholstery is a later reupholstery in natural sheepskin, a material frequently used in Scandinavian furniture of the period for its warmth, durability, and textural depth. The backrest is accented with leather-covered buttons, adding a subtle contrast to the ivory-toned pile.
This example is in good vintage condition, with small signs of use and a light patina consistent with age. The reupholstery has preserved the integrity of the design while providing renewed functionality. As a 1940s piece, it reflects the transitional moment in Scandinavian design when traditional cabinetmaking met the softer, more human-centered lines of mid-century modernism.
