Folke Bensow stool
This very rare stool, model “Taburett nr 1” was designed by Folke Bensow and produced by Näfveqvarns Bruk in Sweden. The stool was first exhibited at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1925, marking a significant moment in early 20th-century design. Made entirely of cast iron, the stool exhibits a warm patina from natural oxidation, which enhances its sculptural presence and contributes to its vintage character.
The design of the stool features a perforated lattice seat, framed by elegantly curved armrests that end in voluted scrolls. These organic shapes and delicate curves are influenced by the Art Nouveau movement, which often emphasized flowing, natural forms. The structural integrity of the stool is reinforced by a horizontal stretcher, adorned with ornamental detailing, that connects the two vertical side panels. These side panels are further decorated with stylized relief patterns, referencing the organic motifs that were central to Art Nouveau design. The base of the stool consists of stepped, rectangular supports, providing stability while maintaining a grounded aesthetic.
Folke Bensow was a Swedish architect and designer known for his contributions to early 20th-century metal furniture and public works. His work often blended classical architectural elements with the evolving Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. His collaboration with Näfveqvarns Bruk produced several notable cast-iron furniture pieces, which are celebrated for their durability and aesthetic refinement.
Näfveqvarns Bruk, founded in the 17th century, was one of Sweden’s most prestigious foundries, renowned for producing high-quality cast-iron designs for both industrial and decorative use. During the early 20th century, the foundry collaborated with leading designers to create cast-iron furniture that seamlessly combined artistry with practicality.
This stool exemplifies Swedish Grace, a design style that balances craftsmanship with ornamentation. Originally designed for both interior and exterior use, it retains a timeless quality, integrating historical influences with modernist functionality.
The dimensions of the stool are 60.5 cm in width, 40 cm in depth, and 48.5 cm in height (23.82 x 15.75 x 19.09 inches), with a seat height of 43.5 cm (17.13 inches). This piece remains a remarkable example of early Swedish design, showcasing the fusion of form, function, and artistry.
