Frits Henningsen easy chair
This rare high-back easy chair was designed and produced by master cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen in Denmark during the 1950s. The chair features a sculptural solid oak frame paired with a deeply upholstered seat and backrest covered in black leather. Its composition is defined by an expressive, flowing form with strong visual rhythm and organic curvature.
The high, winged backrest gently curves outward and upward, providing extended support while creating a soft sculptural presence. The leather upholstery is tightly fitted and subtly padded, showing natural patina and slight creasing consistent with careful use and age. The seat and back form a continuous shell-like structure, delivering ergonomic comfort without excessive bulk.
The oak frame displays a warm, medium tone with fine grain and features gracefully arched legs and sweeping armrests. These armrests extend from the front legs in a continuous curve that loops upward and rearward with pronounced tapering and flair. Integrally joined with the rear legs, the armrests exemplify Henningsen’s precise craftsmanship and cabinetmaking expertise. The seamless joinery and sculpted wood quality enhance both structural strength and aesthetic balance.
Frits Henningsen was a distinguished Danish cabinetmaker and designer active mainly in the early to mid-20th century. Trained under Kaare Klint, Henningsen developed a unique approach blending traditional cabinetmaking with modernist sensibilities. His limited production and atelier-style craftsmanship make his pieces comparatively rare.
This chair is in good vintage condition, with a well-preserved oak frame and original leather showing gentle signs of wear and use. The oak has developed a rich patina, and the structure remains sound. The dimensions are 66 cm wide, 93 cm deep, and 94 cm high, with a seat height of 37 cm, approximately 26 inches wide, 36.6 inches deep, 37 inches high, and a seat height of 14.6 inches.
