Frits Henningsen easy chair
This rare wingback easy chair was designed by the Danish cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen and produced in his own workshop in Denmark in 1935. Henningsen, one of the most respected figures in 20th-century Scandinavian furniture design, was known for his exceptional craftsmanship, refined detailing, and dedication to traditional cabinetmaking techniques. His designs often combine classic forms with functional elegance, resulting in timeless pieces that remain highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs today.
The chair is constructed from solid oak and upholstered in its original black Niger leather, a premium material prized for its durability and rich patina. The leather has aged beautifully over the decades, displaying a soft sheen and natural signs of wear that testify to the piece’s history and authenticity. Its tall, sculpted wingback form offers both visual presence and exceptional comfort, while the gently curved armrests and deep seat enhance its inviting character.
The overall design reflects Henningsen’s approach to furniture as both functional object and work of art, balancing robust construction with graceful proportions. Produced in the interwar period, this chair represents a significant moment in Scandinavian design history, when cabinetmakers were beginning to blend artisanal tradition with emerging modernist ideals.
The piece remains in good vintage condition with signs of age and a developed patina that enrich its character. It exemplifies the quality and craftsmanship that define Henningsen’s legacy and stands as an important example of early Danish modern design.
