Frits Henningsen easy chairs
The upholstery features a lightly button-tufted backrest, with leather-covered buttons arranged in a restrained geometric pattern. The rounded front edge of the seat contrasts with the more angular construction of the lower frame. Rows of closely spaced brass nails define the edges of the upholstery, emphasizing the curved profiles and traditional cabinetmaking details. The combination of cognac-brown leather, warm-toned beech and aged brass creates a consistent material palette characteristic of Danish cabinetmade furniture of the period.
Frits Henningsen (1889–1965) was a Danish furniture designer and master cabinetmaker associated with the development of Danish modern furniture during the first half of the 20th century. After completing his training as a cabinetmaker, he established his own workshop in Copenhagen in 1915, where he designed and produced furniture with particular attention to craftsmanship, proportions and traditional woodworking techniques. Unlike many of his contemporaries who increasingly collaborated with larger manufacturers, Henningsen maintained a workshop-based approach to production, allowing him to exercise close control over construction, materials and finishing.
Henningsen’s designs frequently combined classical furniture traditions with the emerging functionalist principles of the 1930s. His upholstered seating was particularly distinguished by carefully developed silhouettes, curved wooden structures and an emphasis on ergonomic proportions. These easy chairs reflect that approach through their integrated backrests and armrests, restrained decorative detailing and balance between substantial upholstery and relatively light wooden bases. The design belongs to the transitional period between traditional Danish cabinetmaking and the more simplified forms that would later characterize Scandinavian modernism.
The chairs are in good vintage condition, with signs of age and use consistent with their period of production. The beech frames retain a warm patina with minor surface wear and variations in tone. The newly upholstered Niger leather displays natural grain and tonal variation, while the brass nailhead detailing provides a traditional finishing element. A matching sofa from the same design is also available.
