Frits Henningsen sofa
This exceptionally rare sofa was designed and produced by Danish cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen in the 1930s. The frame is constructed from solid oak, showcasing Henningsen’s meticulous attention to detail with precisely shaped edges and refined joinery. The design features linear forms with subtly tapered legs, striking a balance between structural robustness and elegant simplicity.
The upholstery is crafted from niger leather, a durable, high-quality material known for developing a rich patina over time. The deep brown leather harmonizes beautifully with the warm tones of the oak frame. The seat and back cushions are generously padded, providing both comfort and visual depth. The armrests feature an elegant curved transition between vertical and horizontal elements, reinforcing the sofa’s cohesive and refined aesthetic.
Frits Henningsen was a highly respected Danish furniture designer and cabinetmaker, noted for his dedication to craftsmanship and timeless design. Unlike many contemporaries, Henningsen closely supervised the production of his furniture, ensuring the highest standards of material quality and construction. His work melded traditional woodworking techniques with modernist principles, resulting in furniture that is both functional and sophisticated.
This sofa is a significant example of early Scandinavian modern design, illustrating the transition from traditional cabinetmaking toward the cleaner lines and restrained detailing that characterize mid-century Danish furniture. The piece is well preserved, with a beautifully aged patina on both the leather and oak surfaces.
The sofa measures approximately 200 cm wide, 76 cm deep, and 73 cm high (78.7 x 29.9 x 28.7 inches), with a seat height of 43 cm (16.9 inches).
