Information

This is a rare and distinguished high-back sofa designed and produced by the Danish cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen in the 1940s. Known for his uncompromising standards of craftsmanship and sculptural refinement, Henningsen created this piece with a focus on elegant proportions, traditional cabinetmaking, and the use of high-quality natural materials.

The sofa features a slender oak frame with subtly tapered legs and a high, gracefully curved backrest that envelops the sitter. The structural form creates a protected, almost cocoon-like seating experience while maintaining a visually light profile. The armrests flow upward into the back in a continuous curve, giving the piece a unified, almost architectural silhouette.

The entire seat and interior structure are upholstered in natural vegetable-tanned leather, which has developed a deep amber-brown patina over time. The leather shows visible signs of use, including creasing and tonal variation, which contributes to the authenticity and historical character of the piece. Integrated into the inner flanks are molded leather arm pads—an elegant detail that is both functional and sculptural in nature. The seat cushion is fully upholstered in matching leather, offering a continuous visual surface.

Frits Henningsen was a master cabinetmaker and designer working in Copenhagen during the early to mid-20th century. He produced his pieces in his own workshop and often created unique or very limited production runs for private clients. Rejecting industrial production, Henningsen relied on the traditional methods of Danish craftsmanship, and his work is today regarded as among the most refined of the Danish modern movement.

This sofa represents the intersection of functionality and sculpture—an object both deeply comfortable and materially expressive. It retains its original upholstery and frame and remains in good vintage condition with a visibly aged patina consistent with its age and use.
