Fritz Hansen easy chairs
This very rare pair of easy chairs, model 3670, designed by Fritz Hansen and produced by the Danish manufacturer Fritz Hansen in 1938, exemplifies early Scandinavian modernism with its sculptural yet inviting form. The chairs are distinguished by generous proportions, rounded lines, and a deep, enveloping seat design that prioritizes comfort without compromising elegance.
Constructed from beech wood, a material prized for its strength and durability in Danish furniture making, the frames feature softly curved armrests that flow seamlessly into the slightly reclined backrests. This ergonomic shaping creates both visual harmony and physical support. The wide, padded seats and gently sloping backs enhance comfort, further enriched by the tactile appeal of newly applied sheepskin upholstery. Small natural leather buttons embedded subtly in the backrests add a refined, artisanal detail.
Founded in 1872, Fritz Hansen played a pivotal role in the development of Danish furniture design. Although later celebrated for collaborations with Arne Jacobsen, the company’s earlier works like the model 3670 reflect a transitional period where traditional craftsmanship gave way to modernist ideals characterized by organic forms and functional warmth.
This pair is an excellent example of organic modernism, where simplicity, quality, and tactile comfort are paramount. The use of natural materials combined with expert upholstery embodies the Danish design ethos of longevity and understated elegance.
Each chair measures approximately 80 centimeters in width, 80 centimeters in depth, and 77.5 centimeters in height (31.5 x 31.5 x 30.5 inches), with a seat height of 37 centimeters (14.6 inches).
