Gae Aulenti table lamps
This very rare and tall pair of Pipistrello table lamps was designed by Gae Aulenti and produced by Martinelli Luce in Italy. Introduced in 1965, the Pipistrello, also known as Modello 620, is one of the most iconic lighting designs of the 20th century. These examples come from the original production series and feature a telescopic central column that allows adjustable height between 71 cm and 87 cm (approximately 28 to 34.3 inches), with a maximum diameter of 54 cm (about 21.3 inches).
The lamps consist of a flared metal base finished in cream lacquer, a brushed stainless steel telescoping column, and an opal white methacrylate diffuser shaped evocatively like a bat’s wings—the Italian word “pipistrello” means bat. The organic curves of the diffuser create the lamp’s signature silhouette and distribute light softly both upward and downward. The telescopic mechanism allows the lamp’s height to be modified, adapting its function from a table to a floor lamp.
Gae Aulenti (1927–2012) was a distinguished Italian architect and designer, celebrated for her multidisciplinary approach across interiors, exhibitions, industrial design, and architecture. The Pipistrello lamp exemplifies her talent for merging sculptural form with technical innovation, blending modernist rationality with playful biomorphic shapes.
This pair represents a seminal example of Italian mid-century design, combining striking visual presence with functional versatility. The lamps are in very good vintage condition, showing minor surface wear and a consistent patina on the metal components appropriate to their age.
Each lamp accommodates four E14 bulbs up to 25 watts. The underside is stamped with “Martinelli Luce, Pipistrello, Modello 620, Design Gae Aulenti, Made in Italy” confirming their authenticity and production origin.
