Göran Malmvall dining table
Dining table designed by Göran Malmvall and produced by Svensk Fur in Sweden during the 1940s. Executed in solid pine, the table is a fine example of Malmvall’s functional yet sculptural approach to craftsmanship within the Swedish Grace and early modernist traditions. The design emphasizes the natural qualities of pine, showcasing the grain patterns and warm tone of the wood.
The structure features two solid trestle legs connected by a horizontal stretcher, providing both visual balance and stability. The legs are characterized by precise cutouts and pegged joinery, expressing the honesty of construction typical of Svensk Fur’s production. The tabletop has slightly rounded edges and includes two extension leaves, allowing the table to expand from 130 cm to 210 cm in width.
This piece reflects the broader Scandinavian design ethos of the mid-20th century, where simplicity, craftsmanship, and natural materials defined the aesthetic. Göran Malmvall, part of the renowned Malmvall family of cabinetmakers associated with Svensk Fur, created furniture that combined robust construction with elegant proportions.
The table remains in good vintage condition with signs of use and patina consistent with age, including surface marks that enhance its authenticity and material character. A matching set of four chairs in the same design and material is also available.
