Gösta Jonsson easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs was designed by Gösta Jonsson and produced in Jönköping, Sweden during the 1940s. The chairs exemplify early Scandinavian modern seating, characterized by generous, rounded forms combined with a restrained, organic aesthetic.
Each chair is built on a solid beech frame with slightly tapered legs stained in a dark finish. The upholstery has been fully restored using natural sheepskin in a soft beige tone, which provides a plush, tactile surface. The dense sheepskin adds texture and depth, while natural leather-covered buttons subtly accentuate the backrest, maintaining a connection to traditional Scandinavian upholstery methods. The overall silhouette features a low, wide seat and an enveloping, curved back that extends into gently rounded wings, creating a sculptural yet inviting form.
Gösta Jonsson, though less internationally known, was an active mid-20th-century Swedish furniture designer whose work is gaining recognition for balancing softness with structural clarity. This pair likely stems from a smaller Swedish workshop, typical of regional production during the era, reflecting the period’s emphasis on craftsmanship and material honesty.
Each chair measures 78 cm wide, 80 cm deep, and 68 cm high, with a seat height of 39 cm (approximately 30.7 x 31.5 x 26.8 inches, seat height 15.4 inches). The chairs are in very good condition, with structurally restored frames and freshly applied upholstery. Minor wear consistent with age is visible on the legs. A matching sofa is also available.
