Gösta Jonsson easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs was designed by Swedish furniture designer Gösta Jonsson and produced in Jönköping, Sweden, during the 1940s. They represent the soft, organic aesthetic typical of Scandinavian mid-century design, combining elegant craftsmanship with comfort-focused proportions. The chairs feature gently curved backrests that wrap around the sitter, creating an embracing and sculptural silhouette, while the low profile and deep seats make them ideal for relaxed seating.
The frames are constructed from solid beech and rest on tapered, dark-stained legs that contrast beautifully with the newly upholstered sheepskin covering. The upholstery, in a natural light tone, enhances the tactile quality of the pieces and emphasizes their original mid-century character, while the addition of cognac leather buttons offers a refined visual accent and nod to the original detailing. The use of natural materials such as sheepskin and beech reflects the Scandinavian design tradition of craftsmanship and functionality combined with understated luxury.
Gösta Jonsson was known for his elegant and comfortable seating furniture, often designed for private homes and public interiors during the mid-20th century. His work stands out for its attention to ergonomics and materials, and these easy chairs are an excellent example of his approach — balancing sculptural form with inviting comfort. The pieces have been completely restored and remain in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor signs of age.
