Gösta Jonsson sofa
This rare sofa was designed by Gösta Jonsson and produced in Jönköping, Sweden during the 1940s. The design reflects the soft-edged, sculptural aesthetic typical of Swedish mid-century seating, influenced by the emerging organic modernism of the era.
The frame is constructed from beech wood and supported by four slightly tapered, dark-stained solid beech legs. The upholstery has been fully restored with high-quality natural sheepskin in a light beige tone, which highlights the sofa’s curvilinear form. The backrest features a subtly concave profile that gently embraces the sitter, accented by natural leather-covered buttons that reference traditional Scandinavian upholstery techniques. The seat is wide, low, and slightly forward-thrusting, creating an inviting and relaxed posture.
Gösta Jonsson was an active Swedish designer in the mid-20th century, working primarily in regional workshops around Jönköping. His designs combine the solid construction traditions of Scandinavian cabinetmaking with the softer lines and material experimentation characteristic of the 1940s. This sofa forms a matched set with his easy chairs from the same period, both recognized for their rounded backrests and meticulous upholstery.
The sofa measures 150 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 73 cm in height, with a seat height of 40 cm (approximately 59 x 31.5 x 28.7 inches, seat height 15.7 inches). It is in good vintage condition, fully restored with structural reinforcement and new upholstery. Minor signs of age remain on the legs, while the sheepskin covering is fresh and evenly applied. A matching pair of easy chairs is also available.
