Grete Jalk children chair
This unique children’s chair was designed by Grete Jalk and produced in Denmark during the 1960s. Constructed from bent and laminated birch plywood, the chair is finished with a clear lacquer that highlights the natural grain and warm honey tones of the wood. The design is both geometric and playful, composed of interlocking planes forming the backrest, seat, sides, and base. Both the back and seat feature evenly spaced circular perforations, providing ventilation and adding a distinctive rhythmic pattern to the aesthetic. Two oversized red discs serve as stylized wheels, introducing a functional and sculptural element, while circular hand holes on the armrests offer ergonomic and tactile detail.
The chair is in excellent condition, with only minor wear consistent with age. The surface maintains its original finish, and the construction remains stable and intact.
Grete Jalk (1920–2006) was a prominent figure in Danish modern design, renowned for her work with molded plywood and her dedication to functional, socially conscious furniture. Though best known for her adult seating and cabinetry, this rare children’s chair demonstrates her ability to apply modernist principles to designs for younger users without sacrificing formal clarity or material quality.
The chair embodies the ethos of Scandinavian mid-century design, blending minimalism, craftsmanship, and an intuitive understanding of human use. It measures 50 cm in width, 55.5 cm in depth, and 47.5 cm in height, approximately 19.7 x 21.9 x 18.7 inches.
