Gunnar Ander ashtray
This freestanding ashtray was designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1950s. It exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century decorative design by combining practical function with sculptural refinement in a modest yet distinctive form.
The ashtray is composed of brass, black lacquered metal, and granite stone. Its basin is hemispherical with a matte black finish, bordered by a polished brass ring. Four brass cigarette rests, evenly spaced around the rim, feature organically curved shapes that contrast with the geometric simplicity of the bowl. Rising vertically from the basin’s center is a slender brass stem ending in a circular loop, serving both as a visual focal point and a practical lifting handle.
The basin is supported by a slim black lacquered steel stem anchored into a solid octagonal granite base. The base is dark grey with visible mineral inclusions, providing both stability and a visual grounding. Its octagonal form adds a subtle geometric variation that complements the circular motifs of the basin and loop.
The ashtray is in good condition, showing wear consistent with age and use. The brass components exhibit natural patina and minor surface marks. The black lacquered stem has small abrasions, while the stone base shows light edge wear but no structural damage.
Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) was a Swedish architect and designer known for his work in furniture, lighting, and metalwork. He collaborated extensively with Ystad Metall, a manufacturer celebrated for its mid-20th-century production of decorative brassware and household accessories. Ander’s designs often blend restrained modernism with expressive metal detailing.
The ashtray measures 16.5 centimeters in diameter and 60.5 centimeters in height (approximately 6.5 by 23.8 inches).
