Information

This pair of freestanding ashtrays, designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1960s, exemplifies the refined aesthetic and craftsmanship of mid-century Scandinavian modern design. Each ashtray features a tall, slender brass stem supporting a square-shaped glass ashtray with a textured surface, which rests securely on a circular glass base. The design balances transparency and solidity, with clear glass elements juxtaposed against polished brass, creating a sculptural presence that is both elegant and functional.

The brass components display a warm golden tone, complemented by the clear glass which introduces a light and airy quality to the overall form. The precision in construction is evident, as the glass ashtrays are firmly set within the brass frame, reflecting careful attention to detail. The original manufacturer’s label from Ystad Metall is still attached, noting the “YMAT” surface treatment applied to the brass, which is intended to preserve its finish and should not be polished to maintain the original patina.

Measuring 11.5 cm in width and depth and standing 60 cm tall (approximately 4.5 by 4.5 by 23.6 inches), these ashtrays possess a slender and elegant profile. The combination of materials and design sophistication make them distinctive examples of Gunnar Ander’s work and the craftsmanship of Ystad Metall during the mid-20th century.
