Gunnar Ander side table
This small side table with integrated smoking accessories was designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1950s. The design features a circular brass tray mounted on a slender metal stem finished in black lacquer. The stem is anchored by a flat, disc-shaped stone base, creating a composition that balances polished brass, matte black metal, and the natural texture of the stone. This contrast in materials highlights differences in surface quality and weight, while the vertical arrangement maintains a clean, streamlined profile.
Gunnar Ander was a Swedish architect and designer noted for his collaborations with Ystad Metall, particularly in producing lighting fixtures and decorative accessories. His work frequently combined elegant, slender geometries with detailed craftsmanship, especially in brass and glass. Ystad Metall was an established Swedish manufacturer known for refined metalwork and design pieces, active during the early to mid-20th century.
The side table is in very good vintage condition, showing minor surface wear on the brass tray and stone base that is consistent with its age and careful use. The lacquered metal stem remains intact with only slight signs of wear.
The table measures 22 cm in diameter and 61 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 8.7 inches in diameter and 24 inches in height. This piece reflects mid-century Scandinavian design’s emphasis on material contrast and functional elegance.
