Gunnar Ander side table
This small side table was designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1950s. It represents Scandinavian mid-century metalwork through its restrained proportions, material clarity, and a formal language that balances functionality with sculptural elegance.
The tabletop consists of a shallow circular brass tray with a softly raised rim and a polished surface that has developed a warm natural patina over time. At its center rises a solid brass conical stem ending in a circular loop handle, a recurring motif in Ander’s designs, which provides both a vertical accent and practical ease of movement. The tray is supported by a slender black lacquered metal rod, which is visually light yet structurally stable.
The table rests on a heavy octagonal base carved from dark polished granite, featuring natural mineral inclusions. This stone base contrasts in texture and material with the brass and lacquered metal, adding visual interest and stability. The interplay of geometric shapes—a round tray, an octagonal base, and a vertical cylinder—creates a harmonious and balanced composition.
The table is in good condition, showing wear consistent with age and use. The brass tray exhibits signs of oxidation and surface marks, while the lacquered stem retains its original finish with minor abrasions. The granite base is very well preserved with minimal edge wear.
Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) was a Swedish designer and architect renowned for his work in decorative arts and lighting. His collaboration with Ystad Metall, a manufacturer active from the early 20th century until the 1960s, produced a range of objects in brass and wrought iron. This piece is typical of Ander’s refined and functional style, combining simplicity of form with thoughtful material contrasts and subtle detailing.
The dimensions are 21.5 centimeters in diameter and 60.5 centimeters in height (approximately 8.5 by 23.8 inches).
