This is a set of five Art Deco vases designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad-Metall in Sweden during the 1950s. The vases are crafted entirely in brass and exhibit a sculptural form that is both decorative and architectonic, characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian interpretations of the Art Deco aesthetic.
Each vase features a fluted, vertically ribbed body with eight concave facets tapering from a wider, undulating rim to a narrow conical base. The base is soldered to a flat circular foot, providing balance and contrast to the upward movement of the vessel. The opening of each vase forms a lobed contour, enhancing its ornamental value and creating an interplay of shadow and reflection across the polished brass surface.
The brass shows a natural patina, with areas of oxidation and surface wear consistent with age and material. This aging emphasizes the handcrafted quality and the honest use of materials associated with Scandinavian decorative arts of the period.
Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) was a Swedish designer and architect whose work bridged modernist principles with expressive material and form. He collaborated extensively with Ystad-Metall and Lindshammars Glasbruk, producing lighting, glassware, and metalwork. His designs are often marked by a clear structural rhythm and refined craftsmanship.
Ystad-Metall, active from the early 20th century until the 1960s, was one of Sweden’s foremost producers of decorative brass and pewter objects. Their output during the mid-century period is particularly known for its high-quality production standards and collaborations with leading designers such as Ander.
The largest vase measures 8 cm in diameter and 16.5 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 3.15 inches by 6.5 inches. The other vases in the set are proportionally smaller, maintaining the same formal language. The set is in good vintage condition with visible patina, wear, and surface marks consistent with age, contributing to their authentic mid-century character.
