Gunnar Nylund vase
This rare ceramic vase was designed by Gunnar Nylund and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1960s. It exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian ceramics, showcasing Nylund’s distinctive approach to form, texture, and glazing.
The vase features an elongated, slender silhouette that tapers toward the base and flares out into a trumpet-like opening. Its surface is finished with a matte green glaze, exhibiting subtle tonal variations that create a soft, organic texture. The glaze’s slightly mottled effect adds depth and dimension, highlighting the handcrafted nature of the piece.
Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997) was a pivotal figure in Swedish ceramics, known for his modernist interpretations of stoneware and porcelain. Serving as artistic director at Rörstrand from the 1930s to the 1950s, he pioneered innovative glazing techniques and elegant, sculptural forms. His designs emphasized smooth, flowing shapes with minimal ornamentation, reflecting the functionalist ideals of Scandinavian design.
Rörstrand, founded in 1726, is one of Sweden’s most esteemed ceramic manufacturers and played a central role in shaping modern Nordic ceramics. During the mid-20th century, the company collaborated with leading designers such as Nylund, Carl-Harry Stålhane, and Hertha Bengtson to produce iconic stoneware pieces.
This vase is in excellent condition, showing only minor signs of age and wear. Its dimensions are 8 cm in diameter and 35 cm in height (3.1 by 13.8 inches), representing a refined example of mid-century Swedish ceramic artistry.
