Gunnar Nylund vase

This ceramic vase, model ARZ—often referred to by its nickname Gäddgap (“Pike’s Mouth”)—was designed by Gunnar Nylund and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden. The vase is a striking example of Nylund’s sculptural and organic design language, characterized by its asymmetrical V-shaped opening that dramatically flares outward, evoking the open jaw of a pike. This dynamic form, both functional and expressive, reveals Nylund’s background in both fine and applied arts and his affinity for biomorphic shapes.

Executed in stoneware, the surface of the vase is finished in a matte beige glaze, subtly speckled to create visual texture and enhance the material depth. The glaze is subdued yet complex, with a soft, tactile quality that highlights the hand-crafted nature of the piece. The surface variation and glazing technique accentuate the clean yet sculptural contours of the vase, contributing to its overall organic presence.

Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997), one of the leading figures in 20th-century Scandinavian ceramics, played a pivotal role at Rörstrand, where he served as artistic director for several decades. His work is known for its experimental glazes, modernist sensibilities, and sculptural clarity. The ARZ model, in particular, exemplifies his ability to transform a utilitarian object into a compelling art piece.

This example remains in very good vintage condition, showing light wear consistent with age and careful use. The glaze is well preserved, with no chips or cracks, and the form retains its original definition and surface texture. As a distinctive work from Nylund’s prolific period at Rörstrand, the Gäddgap vase holds both aesthetic and historical value, embodying the expressive potential of Scandinavian ceramic design.
