Halvdan Pettersson bureau
This rare bureau designed by Halvdan Pettersson and produced by Tibro möbelfabrik in Sweden during the 1950s exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century refinement through its materials, form, and decorative restraint. The bureau features a rounded rectangular body clad in white artificial leather, accented with two parallel lines of bronze nailhead trim that run across the fronts of the three drawers. The shape is softened by its curved sides, giving it an almost elliptical profile that contrasts with the geometric symmetry of the drawer arrangement.
The top is finished in richly grained mahogany with a slightly beveled edge and surrounded by a raised brass gallery, adding a finely tailored touch while providing subtle protection for items placed on the surface. The tapered legs are also mahogany and fitted with brass sabots, balancing visual elegance with structural integrity. The color palette is warm and neutral, with the creamy tone of the artificial leather complementing the reddish-brown tones of the mahogany and the muted patina of the brass.
This piece reflects Halvdan Pettersson’s ability to blend traditional cabinetmaking craftsmanship with a modernist approach to materials and silhouette. Pettersson was known for his collaborations with leading Swedish furniture makers such as Tibro möbelfabrik, who were noted for their high-quality production and precision detailing during the postwar period.
The bureau is in good vintage condition with visible signs of use and a developed patina, particularly on the brass elements, consistent with its age.
