Hans Olsen easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, designed by Hans Olsen and produced by Viskadalens Möbelindustri (Viska Möbler) in Kinna, Sweden, reflects the designer’s talent for combining modernist structure with inviting materials and ergonomic comfort. These chairs are distinguished by their thoughtful proportions, refined detailing, and the harmonious contrast between the natural oak frames and well-aged leather upholstery.
Each chair features a solid oak frame finished in a warm golden tone, with visible grain and smooth, rounded transitions between structural elements. The construction emphasizes gentle curves and tapering components, characteristic of Olsen’s design language. The legs are slightly angled for stability, while the rear uprights subtly lean backward to accommodate the reclined posture of the seat and backrest.
The seating surfaces are made of tan leather, which has developed a soft patina over time. The leather displays areas of wear, scuffing, and tonal variation, contributing to the vintage character of the chairs. The stitching is done in contrasting white thread, offering a subtle decorative accent and demonstrating careful craftsmanship. The armrests employ a sling-style leather suspension, creating an open and relaxed profile that enhances the chairs’ lightness and visual rhythm.
The leather is tensioned between the frame without heavy padding, relying on its flexibility and shaping to deliver comfort. This construction method contributes to the chair’s minimal yet expressive form, balancing structural clarity with material softness.
Condition is consistent with age and use. The oak frames remain structurally solid, with only minor surface marks. The leather is intact, with no tears or repairs, and its patina adds historical depth to the overall presentation. These elements combine to form a pair of seating pieces that are both sculptural and functional, with a timeless presence.
