Hans Olsen easy chairs
These rare easy chairs were designed by Hans Olsen and produced by Viskadalens Möbelindustri in Kinna, Sweden, during the 1960s. The design combines Scandinavian restraint with material warmth, using a frame crafted in solid teak paired with a suspended seat and backrest in natural suede. The form is characterized by Olsen’s typical balance of geometric clarity and organic comfort, expressed through a light and open structure where the frame and upholstery interact harmoniously.
The chairs feature elegantly tapered legs and rounded edges that highlight the craftsmanship of the solid teak construction. The frame supports a floating seat of thick suede leather, which is stretched and fastened using leather straps and brass fittings. The suede has developed a deep, rich patina, enhancing its tactile character and giving the chairs an authentic, lived-in presence. The visible joinery and slightly tilted seat angle provide both visual rhythm and ergonomic support, hallmarks of Scandinavian modern seating design.
Hans Olsen (1919–1992) was a Danish architect and designer educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kaare Klint. His work reflects the ideals of the Danish modern movement, emphasizing human comfort, craftsmanship, and simplicity of form. While Olsen produced many of his designs in Denmark, these particular chairs illustrate his broader influence across Scandinavia, with Swedish manufacturers such as Viskadalens Möbelindustri realizing his concepts to the same high standard of material and detail.
Produced in Kinna, Sweden, the craftsmanship of Viskadalens Möbelindustri reflects the period’s dedication to material honesty and functionality. The combination of teak and natural suede embodies the warm material palette and subtle sophistication of mid-century Scandinavian design, uniting tactile appeal with visual lightness.
The pair is in good vintage condition, showing signs of use consistent with age. The suede upholstery has developed a beautiful patina with natural wear, and the teak frames display minor surface marks and an even, warm tone. Structurally stable and visually cohesive, these chairs preserve their original integrity and character.
