Information

This rare armchair, model JH-813, was designed by renowned Danish designer Hans J. Wegner and produced by the distinguished cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Denmark during the 1970s. It stands as an excellent example of Wegner’s late-career work, where he increasingly explored the fusion of traditional craftsmanship with industrial materials.

The chair is constructed with a chromed plated steel frame, offering a sleek, reflective surface that contrasts with the softness of the original leather upholstery. The leather is a warm, natural brown tone, showing an appealing patina and subtle wear consistent with age and careful use. The surface of the leather displays slight creasing and color variation, which contribute to the authentic vintage character of the piece.

The structure features a minimalist form with a strong focus on clean lines and practical proportions. The backrest and seat are gently curved to provide ergonomic comfort, while the exposed tubular frame emphasizes both strength and lightness. The overall expression is refined yet functional, embodying the key principles of Scandinavian modern design.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Danish furniture design, celebrated for his deep understanding of woodworking and his ability to combine aesthetic simplicity with functional innovation. His designs are known for their timeless quality and have become icons of Danish modernism. Johannes Hansen was a leading cabinetmaker whose workshop played a crucial role in the production of many important Danish designs throughout the mid-20th century, collaborating closely with architects and designers like Wegner.

This armchair belongs to the broader Scandinavian and Danish design movement, characterized by a commitment to craftsmanship, material honesty, and an understated elegance that values both form and function.
