Information

Bullhorn Chair, model JH-518, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1960 and produced by master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen, Copenhagen. Considered one of Wegner’s rarest and most sculptural chair designs, the JH-518 occupies a special position within his extensive body of work, demonstrating his exceptional ability to unite traditional craftsmanship, organic form, and structural innovation. Produced in limited numbers, the model remains highly sought after by collectors of important Danish Modern furniture.

The chair is executed in richly figured teak with contrasting oak inlays and retains its original natural leather seat. The defining feature is the distinctive curved crest rail, whose sweeping horn-like extensions inspired the model’s popular nickname, the “Bullhorn Chair”. Elegantly tapered and sculpted, the backrest wraps gently around the sitter while maintaining a remarkably light visual expression. The carefully shaped vertical supports merge seamlessly into the back rail, creating a fluid and continuous form that exemplifies Wegner’s mastery of woodworking.

The seat is upholstered in original natural leather, suspended within the teak frame and displaying a warm ivory tone developed through age and use. The leather has acquired a desirable patina with subtle creasing, tonal variation, and marks consistent with decades of careful use. These characteristics contribute to the authenticity and character of the chair while highlighting the quality of the natural materials employed in its construction.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is widely regarded as one of the most influential furniture designers of the twentieth century. Trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, Wegner became internationally celebrated for his ability to reinterpret traditional chair typologies through a distinctly Scandinavian lens. Throughout his career he designed more than five hundred chairs, many of which have become enduring icons of modern furniture design. His work is distinguished by its refined proportions, sculptural elegance, and deep understanding of ergonomics and craftsmanship.

The collaboration between Wegner and Johannes Hansen produced some of the most significant achievements of Danish Modern design. Hansen’s workshop was renowned for its uncompromising quality and its ability to realize Wegner’s most ambitious and technically demanding designs. Chairs produced by Johannes Hansen are particularly valued by collectors due to their limited production, exceptional craftsmanship, and historical importance within the development of post-war Scandinavian furniture.

This example presents in good vintage condition. The teak frame displays a deep, warm coloration with a beautifully matured surface and minor wear consistent with age and use. The original natural leather seat exhibits patina, light staining, creasing, and age-related marks that enhance the chair’s character. The construction remains sound and stable, preserving the sculptural integrity and functionality of this rare and highly collectible design.
